If you get nervous at the mere mention of porn then I suggest you pull up your bootstraps and get over it. We’re all adults here (I hope) and it’s fair to say that porn, while it makes some people fidget, is just a normal aspect of society. And frankly speaking, porn and porn filmmakers have led the way in filmmaking not only in budget but also in technology and distribution.

Here’s a short history about porn’s film industry:

Contrary to popular belief polaroid cameras were first made for the purpose of snapping naughty photos. Shocking I know! I bet you’re now thinking back on your family polaroid and cringing at the realization

BUT c’est la vie! They were made as such to avoid having photos developed by developers with the ability to censor pictures and well let’s just say if you have a picture of yourself in your birthday suit it’s probably NSFW.

Just like with the polaroid cameras, the VHS became a necessity followed by the DVD and subsequently the Blu-ray. The hay day of watching porn in the cinema during the days of Deep Throat and the porn cinema scandal slowly evolved into adult VHS stores and so on. But as technology has evolved more and more, the porn industry has seen a decline, some companies even going bankrupt. Internet has given access to thousands, even millions of pornographic websites, many of which offer free access. The free material offered is simply shorter in length than that of something you would pay for, so naturally people choose the free material. I mean, in the day of streaming, downloading and Netflix, the internet is made for porn.

The porn industry refuses to buckle though, finding other ways to earn money whether it be through advertisements or simply stringing people down a path and coercing them into buying something. “Oh here’s this 2 minute video, if you really like it then buy this membership and you can see videos just like it”, etc and so on and so forth. Here is where the tables turn. If porn can accomplish such things then why can’t webseries do the same thing? And what is the next step for both porn and webseries alike to continue being successful, distributing material, and making money.

I’m sure some of you are wondering what is a webseries and what relevance does it have in this article. Webseries are short, generally episodic television or film pieces made solely for distribution on the internet. Series that you might be familiar with are those such as House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and Grace Helbig’s My Damn Channel. So it’s easy to say that webseries could thrive in the same way porn has, making money off of mostly advertisements. And certainly if people like it enough, a show could put out merchandise. Looking at Orange is the New Black alone shows you that something that was born on and exists solely on the internet (or Netflix in this case) can prosper.

So what’s the next step? What can porn and webseries do next to continue thriving in this progressive era? I urge you to think on this question and feel free to reply below and give your thoughts. I mean that’s what I’m trying to do, be thought provoking, or else I wouldn’t be writing this article. Now it’s time for me to leave you to your thoughts.
