Ferdinand J. Haberl

Austrian born Ferdinand J. Haberl specialises in character based, self-reflective and cinematic investigative projects. He has previously worked as a fireman, Army Ranger and war correspondent in various conflict areas and is therefore familiar with logistical hurdles, the difficulties of character-based storytelling, broadcasting procedures and self-reflective approaches to film projects. Coming from a documentary directing background, he still thinks that most dramaturgical methodologies and directing styles found in documentary directing can be applied to feature films. Since documentary filmmakers constantly have to keep their story in mind, connect characters or think on multiple layers when shooting scenes, they have to be storytelling experts. Such flexible skills can successfully be applied to most fictional projects. Ferdinand’s film ‘The War Next Door’ has been nominated for the ‘Student Documentary Award’ at the Sheffield International Documentary Festival. His documentaries from inside a Libyan refugee camp during the NATO air raids and about Palestinian fireman were screened at various European film festivals. He holds an MA in International Security Studies and an MA in Documentary Directing from the National Film and Television School. He currently runs his own media production company, is involved in two Start-up ventures and works as a freelance journalist and cameraman, most recently for Al-Jazeera English in Hong Kong.
