Poker is making its way into the Bible, and it’s making a movie in the process.
Gambling and religion – not two phrases you would commonly find together. While there is no mention of the word ‘gambling’ in the Christian Bible, it states in Timothy 6:10: “For the love of money is a root of all kind of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many grieves.” But gambling and religion are closer than you might think.
Back in Time
In fact, the game of poker, which is commonly mistaken to date back only 150 years or so, is actually an ancient practice dating back to biblical times. Did you know, for example, that a number of poker terms originated in the Bible? For instance, ‘live blind’ is an ancient poker term which once described the use of a goat in a bet – hardly comparable to today’s chips and car keys.
Poker and the Bible
Rewriting the Bible
So strong is this little-known sacred link between gambling and religion, that the geniuses at Titan Poker have created their own Poker Bible. Complete with tongue-in-cheek phrases such as ‘Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the Bluffer, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour,’ the bible is so popular it is now being made into its own movie. Featuring the acting talents of Cain and Abel, (the two brothers who live together in the Garden of Eden Casino Tent) and other biblical characters, the production is sure to get tongues wagging at such high profile events as the Raindance Festival.

The fellas at TitanPoker.com certainly have the right idea when it comes to making movies about gambling – some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters have had their narrative based around the glamour of casinos. Who could forget Sharon Stone’s stunning performance as the trophy wife in Martin Scorsese’s Casino? Or the seriously psychedelic Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, starring Benicio Del Toro, who would later hook up with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels director Guy Ritchie?
The Academy Awards may be over for 2014, but with gambling movie alumni such as The Hangover’s Bradley Cooper going on to score themselves Oscar nominations, the gambling theme is carving a niche for itself in big budget Hollywood movies.
Taking classic bible characters and reinventing their stories, The Poker Bible will see the likes of Joseph dealing with multi-colored cards, while Noah will be making a chipcase of cypress wood to defend himself from the Lord’s vengeful floods.
Those who know the Ten Commandments like the backs of their hands will have to play by a new set of rules, including ‘honor your dealer’ and ‘the name of the game is Texas Hold ‘Em.’ While The Poker Bible may not earn players a place in heaven, the tongue-in-cheek nod to God is a movie that is sure to impress and even teach the most seasoned poker experts a thing or two.
