Trolls.

‘Troll’ is a perjorative word that in Internet slang, is a person who sows discord on the internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory messages in an online community with the deliberate intent of goading or provoking readers into an emotional response often for their own amusement.

One of the signs your social media profile is growing and a signal that your message is getting out there is when you start getting hammered by trolls. I have long suffered abuse from my internet adversaries and have learned to ignore it.

I was trolled on Amazon and made the mistake of having an inflamatory comment taken down. This just fanned the fire and then I was really flamed. That’s when I learned to ignore trolls. Commenting on a troll’s message is called ‘feeding the trolls’.

Then I got this email from a good friend, and member of Raindance whose exemplary work with war vets has been severely hampered by trolls.

Have a look:

My experience with internet trolls

Hi Elliot,

I saw that a Troll was having a go at you and your book “Write And Sell” on Amazon. It brought up some memories so I thought I would write to you in support.

Something very similar happened to me – but a lot worse – a few years ago.

This is a long email but if it helps, it helps, and if it doesn’t then you don’t have to read it. What I want to get across is that the attack is not about you – it is about them.

Either you have attracted jealousy or repressed rage from a student or you are being attacked by an enemy or competing author/filmmaker.

I came across your Troll because I have been reading your work relating to Raindance. And this because I shall be producing a series of films in the near future.

The attacks did me some damage in book sales and stopped me working with the miliary charities which were helping the very guys I wrote the books for.

To demonstrate this is not a long wind up, here are a couple of links to my  interviews for one military charity and some promo work I did for another:

SAS Unarmed Combat Techniques

Killing House

And here is a link to my author page on Amazon:

You will see an American chap who calls himself “Master Hahn” attacks everything I write in reviews both in the UK and the USA. Some have been taken down as too defamatory.

What happened for me was that one of the many military charities set up recently decided I was a competitor. This because I gave away a book from my web site, free to anyone who wanted it, outlining a PTSD treatment I designed. They were making a lot of money billing their own charity for treating veterans themselves as therapists!

Their attack technique was to hire an English con man living in Italy who ran a site “exposing” people alleged to have pretended to be veterans. He listed me and began an attack.

This attack then spread across several veteran web sites.

I was able to call in a favour from an old student of mine serving in the Italian equivalent of SWAT police and he passed word over to his colleagues resulting in the attacker getting 9 months in prison and being deported on imigration charges. Which felt quite good.

Nevertheless, once some mud has been flung some will stick, so I became an embarassment to the several charities I was working with and withdrew.

After some thought I have decided to turn my hand to filmmaking. You will perhaps give me credit for not being totally the character portrayed in my books. For my part, I like what I have seen of your writing and think your pricing is about right.

I hope we will meet up in the not too distant future.
All the best and keep up the good work.

Kind regards,

Robert Chambers

Fade Out

There you have it: A case study that shows the damage a troll has caused. Please let Robert know how you feel by liking his Youtube videos above.

Robert has told me that he’s parlaying his vast military experience into screenplays. I think combining this wealth of material along with his knowledge of publishing makes his work of great interest. And Robert – keep up the great work. don’t feed the trolls!
