You’ve got a movie studio in your pocket!

Explore the vibrant filmmaking landscape in the most diverse city in the world: Toronto. This Smartphone Filmmaking Certificate gets participants writing, shooting, editing — then screening their short films on week 5!

Taught by passionate, professional filmmaker, George D’Amato, whose stunning visual eye was honed as a feature film director in Hollywood, a commercial director with the biggest brands in the world. Most recently George has developed a career as an indie film director and producer.

In this Smartphone Filmmaking course, George takes you through the creative and technical filmmaking process to leverage that small, powerful, visual device right in your pocket. This incredible, little camera with big capabilities has yet to be fully exploited, and George’s unique approach helps you understand the visual power you have, literally, at hand. No more excuses for not directing a short film!

Each weekly session will walk you through the steps necessary to make your own 1- to 3-minute film, which can become your calling card as a director.

Participants will be required to bring an open mind, a lust for filmmaking and the desire to engage in creative problem-solving and ingenuity, and their personal vision to the screen. A smartphone, tablet or any other device with shooting capabilities is the only gear that’s needed.

Prior completion of the Raindance Director’s Foundation Certificate is recommended but not required.

This workshop is limited to 12 filmmakers.

 The Inspiration

Workshop Introduction and Premise: The power is in your hand, and in your eyes. What are you looking at every day, and what are you seeing? Learn techniques and exercises to strengthen your visual curiosity, prowess and develop a film director’s daily ‘muscle.’

Week 1 – Story and Theme

Select the script topic for your film: Examine the theme and story you wish to tell. Collaborate or work on your own. Develop your concept and begin planning your strategy. Complete a homework exercise for Week 2.

Week 2 – Pre-Production

Pre-production work; storyboarding; location scouting; casting: what you have available right under your nose, and what you need to know to access them.

Week 3 – The Shoot

The shoot: Yes, that’s what we do. We shoot.

Week 4 – Post-Production

The Edit/Music:  This is the ’emotional’ story layer you wish to tell, and what adds depth and polish to a film.

Week 5 – The Screening

The screening: We screen and debrief the films you’ve made, discuss how to take this process to your next film and continue to the next level of directing a film.
