Description

Smartphone II – Going Deeper
Your break out film is in your pocket.

This Smartphone II Filmmaking Certificate gets participants right to the heart of a polished and professional short film.

Taught by passionate, professional filmmaker, George D’Amato, whose stunning visual eye was honed as a feature film director in Hollywood. George is also a commercial director with the biggest brands in the world under his belt.

Do a deep dive into a 5-10 minute film. Learn how to elicit the best performance from your actors and deepen your understanding of visual story telling. Smartphone II Filmmaking will teach you how to make a slick and polished presentation.

George takes you through the creative and technical filmmaking process to leverage that small, powerful, visual device right in your pocket. This incredible, little camera with big capabilities has yet to be fully exploited, and George’s unique approach helps you understand the visual power you have, literally, at hand. No more excuses for not directing that short film you have been thinking about for years!

Each weekly session will walk you through the steps necessary to make your own 5-10 minute film, which can become your calling card as a director for festivals around the world.

Participants will be required to bring an open mind, a lust for filmmaking and the desire to engage in creative problem-solving and ingenuity, and their personal vision to the screen. A smartphone, tablet or any other device with shooting capabilities is the only gear that’s needed.

Some short filmmaking experience is recommended.  This workshop is limited to 12 filmmakers.

The Inspiration

Workshop Introduction and Premise: The best stories are the ones closest to us. Learn how to use your own personal experience to enhance your films. The power is in your hand. What are you looking at every day, and what are you seeing? Learn techniques and exercises to strengthen your visual curiosity, prowess and develop a film director’s daily ‘muscle.’

What you will learn

Week 1 – Story, story, story

George works with you side by side with one on one mentoring as well as classroom discussion to select the script topic for your film: He helps you examine the theme and story you wish to tell. Collaborate or work on your own. Develop your concept and begin planning your strategy.

Week 2 – sharpen that story

Work together with George to refine and zero in on the core needs of your characters and story arc. Watch and discuss classic and modern examples of storytelling from some of the world’s best directors.

Week 3 – Be resourceful

Pre-production discussion; storyboarding; location scouting; casting:  George works with you side by side to develop your story boards, review locations and perfect your eye toward a great performance. Learn how to access the things you need that may be right under your nose.

Week 4 – The shoot, the edit

By the time you yell ‘action’ you will be prepared to conquer your story. Weeks of prep and one on one mentoring will set you up for a successful film experience, leading to a great edit. You can’t cut what you don’t shoot. Learn how to shoot for your edit.

Week 5 – The screening

The screening: We screen and debrief the films you’ve made, discuss how to take this process to your next film and continue to the next level of film directing.
