After years of directing for the stage, Patrick Tucker started directing for the screen, and from the start kept a record of all he learned – and got wrong – on the many shoots he has helmed. These notes form the basis of his recently published Secrets of Screen Directing.
The subtitle of the book is The Tricks of the Trade, and this illustrated Zoom presentation will pass on the many techniques that Patrick has learned by doing the job of being the director, rather than just reading about it. At all stages the participants will be able to ask questions and pose their own problems for a solution from someone who has been there and done that – many times.

The main topics will be Conceiving the concept, Planning the shoot, Screen grammar, Casting, Making the pictures support the text, and Working with actors. Questions from the audience are welcomed, and there will be an opportunity of asking for some Grammar Homework to be sent out and worked on at home, and that will be commented on in Part Two for those who want to.

Who should attend?

This presentation is ideal for those who want to direct performances for the camera, who want to be performers on camera, or indeed anyone connected with or interested in screen drama who want to know more about what really goes on when creating those memorable characters we all enjoy watching so much on the screen.

About the Tutor

Patrick has been presenting his Workshops for Raindance for well over twenty years, with courses for both actors and for directors, and has been directing professional actors on stage and on screen since he went into the profession in the 1960s. He has worked in Germany, Ireland, Jordan, the UK and the USA; and in their own languages in Denmark, Israel, Latvia and South Korea.
