The Fundamentals of Sound for Film
Film sound is one of the most overlooked aspects of the filmmaking process – yet it is often said that it is represents 50% of the experience. They say that pictures in movies convey information. Good film sound conveys the emotion. Accordingly, it is the emotion of any event we remember, not the information.
During the course we will be looking at the sound for your film holistically – and identifying real and practical ways for you to save money, time, stress and improving overall sound quality. Naturally, the course will be targeted towards producers and directors, but will be accessible enough for anyone who has an interest in creating great film soundtracks.
This course will cover the aspects of film sound:
- Planning and budgeting for film audio
- Acquiring great sound on location
- Taking your sound through the edit
- Post-production sound – covering dialogue editing, foley, ADR, sound design and mixing
Will contain practical examples, demonstrations, plenty of strongly-held opinions, and answers to all of your questions.

About the Tutor
Roland Heap spans the disciplines of sound recording for music and film, having been born into analogue and raised digitally. He studied music and sound recording at the prestigious Tonmeister course, then cut his teeth at Abbey Road studios, working on Hollywood film scores and classical recordings. After leaving the studios in 2003 he worked as a freelance sound recordist and mixer. He founded Sound Disposition in 2008, a company dedicated to achieving the best possible sound on location and through post-production.
Recently he has pioneered new methodologies for sound-for picture workflows, taking a holistic approach to the soundtrack from inception to deliverables. He now works as a sound designer and recordist, and has supervised the sound for a number of features, including Academy award nominee Ashvin Kumar’s debut feature ‘The Forest’, Sona Jain’s debut feature ‘For Real’, Jonathan Sagall’s feature ‘Lipstikka’, and many more.
