The Fundamentals of Sound for Film

Film sound is one of the most overlooked aspects of the filmmaking process – yet it is often said that it is represents 50% of the experience. They say that pictures in movies convey information. Good film sound conveys the emotion. Accordingly, it is the emotion of any event we remember, not the information.

During the course we will be looking at the sound for your film holistically – and identifying real and practical ways for you to save money, time, stress and improving overall sound quality. Naturally, the course will be targeted towards producers and directors, but will be accessible enough for anyone who has an interest in creating great film soundtracks.

This course will cover the aspects of film sound:

  • Planning and budgeting for film audio
  • Acquiring great sound on location
  • Taking your sound through the edit
  • Post-production sound – covering dialogue editing, foley, ADR, sound design and mixing
  • Delivery

Will contain practical examples, demonstrations, plenty of strongly-held opinions, and answers to all of your questions.

Who Should Attend

Anyone interested in gaining a broad overview of film sound and using it to improve the quality of their productions. Anyone who wants to know how to get better sound for film without necessarily spending more money.
Anyone interested in the lesser-known and behind the scenes aspects of filmmaking.

About the Tutor

Roland Heap spans the disciplines of sound recording for music and film, having been born into analogue and raised digitally. He studied music and sound recording at the prestigious Tonmeister course, then cut his teeth at Abbey Road studios, working on Hollywood film scores and classical recordings. After leaving the studios in 2003 he worked as a freelance sound recordist and mixer. He founded Sound Disposition in 2008, a company dedicated to achieving the best possible sound on location and through post-production.

Recently he has pioneered new methodologies for sound-for picture workflows, taking a holistic approach to the soundtrack from inception to deliverables. He now works as a sound designer and recordist, and has supervised the sound for a number of features, including Academy award nominee Ashvin Kumar’s debut feature ‘The Forest’, Sona Jain’s debut feature ‘For Real’, Jonathan Sagall’s feature ‘Lipstikka’, and many more.

Needs to be longer!! Or I need to pay more and go on the proper courses 😉

This course was wicked… way more informative and interesting than I’d expected or have ever thought about sound. Even just things like the shape of cinema speaker placement and how that’s shaped different countries’ cinema; down to things like the four kinds of mic, the range in terms of holding them as anion mic to a face without distortion.. and foley. So interesting. My film project feels so much better equipped now and professional. I know the difference. Ro just literally gave us everything he could think of, freely, as much had he could cram in in the time spare. Really generous with it. Totally worthwhile course. Hugely recommended.

An excellent course, the tutor knows his craft inside out and is very engaging. If anything- it wasn’t long enough! I would perhaps split the content into two sessions – sound in pre-and production and post-production sound management.

  3. Thomas Jacob

    Thoroughly enjoyed the session.
The tutor was extremely good in the way he presented and communicated with relevant information to fit in the 3-hour session. Message was very clear, structured & supported with visual aids and written materials for ref &review. Considering the depth of the subject, I would probably benefit from attending more detailed sessions on different aspects of sound management and looking for ward. It was worth the time spent.

Excellent evening. I have no experience in this area and learned a lot of basic and more advanced stuff I can use also from my point of view as a screenwriter. Highly recommended!
