Often the first step in the process of filmmaking is engaging a writer. Quite apart from sharing a creative vision, producer and writer need to understand what each may expect from the other in terms of delivery and reward and the timeline within which each may expect the other to perform their respective obligations. In this session we will consider the key components of a writer’s agreement. We will also consider the position where a finished screenplay is acquired by a producer.

Topics covered include:

  • What does a producer want – what will a writer provide?
  • Timeline/ delivery milestones
  • Getting paid
  • Prequels, sequels and other works
  • Copyright/rights
  • Exclusivity and competing projects
  • Credit
  • Acquiring a finished screenplay

What you will learn

Understanding the importance of key legal rights for filmmakers and the contracts by which they are bolted together and how to approach the job of protecting their legal interests in their work.

Each segment is one hour long and presented on Zoom software. You will need WiFi to join the class.
