A 4-Week Practical, Hands-On Screenwriting Course

Want to write a screenplay? Got a great idea for one and want to develop it properly? Written that first draft, but got a bit lost along the way? The Script Development Course will help you turn that idea or draft into a script that you’re proud of

What will the course cover?

Over the course of 4 weeks script coach and writer, Michael Barmish will provide you with the framework, constructive feedback and encouragement you need to put pen to paper and develop or complete your story. The course will cover the following topics:

  • Ideas: techniques to use to generate, flesh out & develop ideas
  • The importance of loglines, concept statements, outlines
  • Theme & Tone: Consistency of theme and tone is vital
  • Conflict: Without conflict there is no story
  • Characterization: Creating memorable characters & exploring subtext
  • Structure: Building structure & texture in the world of your film
  • Format: Correctly formatting your screenplay
  • Visual Storytelling: Using visual storytelling & creating scenes that sizzle
  • Dialogue: Writing compelling dialogue & giving characters a unique voice
  • Rewrite: When to start the rewrite and what comes next

How will you be taught?

Participation is a must. In this 4-evening Script Development Course, in addition to some lecture-style classroom instruction, there will be important exercises and discussion about your projects during which you will receive valuable feedback in a group setting. Even if you only have an idea, we’ll help you develop it into a great story. And the feedback you’ll hear on others’ projects will be invaluable when it comes to writing your own. So if you want to see results, be prepared to come and be heard – and to write!

What will you achieve?

Depending on what stage you’re at when you begin the course, the aim is to write a treatment, first draft or complete your script in the 4 weeks. You’ll have acquired the skills, knowledge and confidence to write and a pitch professional-level scrip

Who should attend?

The Script Development Course is suitable for all levels and abilitie but participants should come to the first class with at least an idea for a story. Whether you have just an idea/outline/treatment/first draft or tenth draft we’ll help you develop or complete it over the 4 weeks. We also welcome novelists, short story writers, storytellers and filmmakers who would like to branch into screenwriting and are seeking a four-week structured class with specific targets and measurable results.

About the tutor

Michael Barmish is an award-winning writer, teacher, and script coach. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Michael graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Temple University’s School of Communications and Theatre, and is now based in Berlin, Germany. After moving to Los Angeles, Michael was hired to write several film projects, including the family film, Kid Cop, produced by Brainstorm Media which aired on HBO and ABC Family networks. In addition to having several screenplays optioned by various Hollywood production companies, Michael’s TV comedy-drama series, Berlin Nomad, is currently in development with a production company in Berlin.

Michael has won awards for his holiday comedy, @Santa, and his romantic-comedy stage play, 10/9, and is a member of the Los Angeles Writers Centre – whose members consist of award-winning writers, directors, actors and dramaturges. In addition to working as a script coach and consulatant, Michael has taught screenwriting and hosted script development workshops at the Los Angeles Writers Center and Raindance. His book, “The Ensuite Life: Traveling the World and Avoiding the Toilet at the End of the Hall”, based on a recent trip around the world was published in 2012.
