The British Independent Film Awards was founded by Raindance in 1998 to honour and celebrate independent films made in Britain. Previous winners have included Billy Elliot, Slumdog Millionaire and The King’s Speech.

This year’s nominees include some first timers for BIFA and some returning veterans. Here is a little bit of information on each of them.

Billy Connolly as Wilf in Quartet

William (Billy) Connolly is a Scottish comedian, musician, presenter and actor.  With a long list of films under his belt, Connolly is best known for Brave, The Last Samurai, The Boondock Saints and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. He has received 6 nominations, but this is his first BIFA nomination.

 

Cillian Murphy as Mike Kiernan in Broken

Cilian Murphy is an Irish film and theatre actor.  Murphy has featured in several mainstream hits. His best known films include Inception, The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, and In Time. This young actor has won 2 awards and been nominated another 26 times.  This will be the third BIFA nomination for Murphy.  The two nominations prior to this year were for Best Actor in 2006 and 2007.

 

Domhnall Gleeson as Connor in Shadow Dancer

Domhnall Gleeson is an Irish writer, director and actor.  This young actor has thrown himself into the film industry.  He has already written and produced several films and featured in 23.  His best known films include the Harry Potter series (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 & 2), True Grit and Never Let Me Go. Gleeson has been recognized for his acting with 2 awards a nomination for an additional award. This is his first BIFA nomination.

 

Rory Kinnear as Bob Oswald in Broken

Rory Kinnear is an English stage, television and film actor.  He has featured in a variety of films, but he is best known for her performances in Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, Wild Target and Wish 143.  Kinnear has won several theatrical awards, but this is his first BIFA nomination.

 

Tom Wilkinson as Graham Dashwood in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Tom Wilkinson is an experience English actor.  He has featured in over one hundred films, his best known film including Michael Clayton, Batman Begins, Shakespeare in Love and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.  With such a wide array of films under his belt, Wilkinson has been recognized for his great work.  He has won 16 awards and been nominated another 34 times.  This is Wilkinson’s first BIFA nomination.
