The British Independent Film Awards was founded by Raindance in 1998 to honour and celebrate independent films made in Britain. Previous winners have included Billy Elliot, Slumdog Millionaire and The King’s Speech.

This year’s nominees for Best Actress have a variety of experience in different roles.  Here is a bit of information about each of them.

Alice Lowe for Sightseers

Alice Lowe is a British actress and writer, primarily focused in comedy. She is known for her performances in films such as Hot Fuzz, Kill List, and the Garth Marenghi series.  Lowe just recently won Best Actress at Spain’s Sitges festival, with Sightseers winning best screenplay.  This is her first nomination at BIFA.

 

 

Andrea Riseborough for Shadow Dance

Andrea Riseborough is a British actress and graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.  She is known for her performances in Happy-Go-Lucky, Made in Dagenham, Never Let Me Go, and W.E. Riseborough has won 4 different awards and been nominated 3 other times.  She was also nominated in 2010 for Best Actress at BIFA for her performance in Brighton Rock.

 

 

Elle Fanning for Ginger and Rosa

Elle Fanning is an American actress who started her cinematic career when she was 3 years old and played the younger version of her sister, Dakota Fanning. Fanning is known for her performances in Super 8, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, We Bought a Zoo, The Door in the Floor. So far in her career, this young actress has won 5 awards and 14 nominations.  This is her first BIFA nomination.

 

 

Judi Dench for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Judi Dench is a British film, stage and television actress.  She has featured in countless films, her best known films including Casino Royale, Quatum of Solace, Skyfall and Notes on a Scandal. Dench has won 47 awards, including Best Actress at BIFA for her performance in Notes on a Scandal, and been nominated for 68 others, also including Best Actress at BIFA for her performance in Mrs. Henderson Presents.

 

 

Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady

Meryl Streep is an American actress who has worked in theatre, television and film.  She is best known for her performances in The Devil Wears Prada, Doubt, Adaptation. and Fantastic Mr. Fox. This world renowned actress has won a staggering 109 awards and been nominated another 156 times, including her record holding 17 Academy Award nominations and 23 Golden Globe Awards nominations.  This is the first BIFA nomination for Streep.
