6 Steps to Bag an Internship - Raindance

poster2Approximately one year ago I decided to apply to a Media and Film internship program. I knew I needed it in order to graduate and I really wanted some true work experience in the field I want to spend the rest of my life in. I decided to apply to the FSU London Media and Film internship program to which I got accepted. I then applied to Raindance through the program and the rest is history! This internship has been the best thing that has ever happened to me and these are the steps I took to “bag” it. Check them out and begin applying for internships now! You won’t regret it!

1) Beast Your Resume

Resumes are way more important than most people think and creating a resume that stands out and shows off all your skills is one of the keys in scoring a great internship or job.  One good idea is to go to the Career Services department on your college campus or elsewhere and have them help you to spruce up your resume.  I personally, had a resume that wasn’t tailored for any Media and Film company much less Raindance, but Career Services helped me to organize all of my skills and experience that were compatible for the internship and now I have a beautiful resume.

2) Find The Right Internship/Program For You

Figure out what you want to gain from your future internship before you start applying. Choose a program you know that you will love and learn from. Sit down with an advisor, search the internet, and find the right internship for YOU!  Also, take chances!! I decided I wanted to go all the way across the pond to do my internship and it was the best decision I could have possibly made.

3) Apply Early

Whether you are applying to the internship directly or applying through a program, like I did, you can never apply too early!  As far as I am concerned, the earlier the better and usually when you apply ahead of time you have chances to win early bird deals or scholarships. Plus, you have extra time to prepare for the interview and it’s a whole lot less stressful.

4) Research like a BOSS

If you applied to your internship through the company you should have already done all of your research and this would just be time to refresh. However, if you applied through a program like I did, you might not know which company is interested in you until later on. Either way once you score an interview, you want to make sure that you do as much research as humanly possible. Look up the company’s mission statement, find out what they look for in interns, and search up past interns experiences. You can never do too much research! You will find yourself connected to that company and be excited and ready for your interview.

5) Ace Your Interview

Be on time, smile, relax, and be prepared! Interviews can be a very nerve-racking process and that is totally fine, if you are prepared and have done all of your research you will be confident and ready! Consider doing a mock interview before your actual interview so that you feel even more ready and prepared. Finally, smile! Smiles and positive energy are super contagious, I’m pretty positive that is one of the main reasons I have scored every job I have had on my college campus as well as my amazing internship with Raindance!

6) Try Again

Sometimes we don’t get what we want and that is OK! Life is all about getting back up and trying again. If you don’t score the internship of your wildest dreams, please don’t be discouraged, a greater internship, or better yet the right internship might be just around the corner. Continue to apply for great internships and never give up!
